Q. Dear Honk: A few years ago, my wife and I jumped through the hoops and got the Real ID golden bear on our driver’s licenses. When I renewed my license this spring, my new license came with the Real ID golden bear, which makes sense because I’m still the same guy. Like some other seniors, my wife realized after the COVID hiatus that it was time for her to stop driving. I applaud her. Her Real ID driver’s license will expire late this fall and she wants to convert it to a Real ID California identification card (complete with golden bear). I called the Department of Motor Vehicles and was told that can’t be done, requiring her to jump through the same hoops she did to get the golden bear on her driver’s license. I see no rational rationale for the DMV to ask for information it already has. Your faithful ancient reader.– Tony Provost, OrangeA. Dear Faithful Ancient Reader:Honk applauds your better half, too, Tony, and hopes when his pate has even less hair, and perhaps a few more wri...3 respiratory viruses could make you sick this season – but for the first time, there are vaccines against all of them

By Brenda Goodman | CNNLast year’s respiratory virus season in the US was a bad one. After two years of extraordinarily light flu seasons, which infectious disease experts attributed to Covid-19 pandemic precautions like social distancing and masking, influenza came roaring back, hitting early and hard. Then respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, which had been showing up at odd times during the year, surged to new heights over the winter months. It was one of the worst RSV seasons many doctors said they could remember. On top of all that, there was an increase in Covid-19 cases, which almost seemed old hat after three years of wave after wave. The bivalent Covid-19 booster arrived just in time to defend against the BA.5 subvariant, but only 17% of Americans wound up getting the updated vaccine, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were packed hospitals. Packed urgent cares. Drug shortages for common cold and fever meds. Endless sick days for kids, then mo...Los Gatos police put in significant overtime amid staffing shortages

The Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department was down more than 25% of its budgeted, sworn officers between January and June of this year and cashed in on significant overtime.During that six-month period, the department billed for more than double the overtime than was budgeted for the fiscal year, costing a total of $509,983, Police Chief Jamie Field said in a mid-year review presented to the town council this week. The department recorded 1,090 additional hours of overtime compared to the same period last year. The police department has mirrored a national trend of understaffing. A 2019 survey by the International Association of Chiefs of Police found “multiple social, political and economic forces,” were to blame, including generational differences, negative perceptions of police and a lengthy hiring process, CNN reported. The Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department is budgeted for 39 officers and currently has 28 active, available and sworn staff. That number is down slightly fr...The SF Giants don’t hit the ball hard. Does that matter?

ATLANTA — Take a look at the leaderboard of how often all 30 MLB teams record balls in play at 110 mph or harder. Now scroll, and scroll, and scroll. Past the Mets and the Padres and the Dodgers. Keep going, beyond the Royals, the Rockies and the A’s.In 29th place: the San Francisco Giants.Heliot Ramos’ home run last Saturday was their 21st such event of the year, fewer than any team but the Washington Nationals.Simply put, the Giants don’t hit the ball very hard.As for how much that matters, and its correlation to MLB’s worst offense for going on two months, it depends who you ask.“Always,” manager Gabe Kapler said. But, hitting coach Justin Viele said, “we’re not chasing it.”Six games in the next 10 days against the Atlanta Braves will provide somewhat of a test case.Eleven players around the league have hit more balls at 110-plus mph than the Giants have as a team, and two of them — Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson — populate Atlanta&...Deputies find incendiary device in Saratoga

When conspiracy theorist Alex Jones marched his way to the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, riling up his legion of supporters, an unassuming middle-aged man in a red “Trump 2020” hat conspicuously tagged along.Videos and photographs reviewed by CNN show the man dutifully recording Jones with his phone as the bombastic media personality ascended to the restricted area of the Capitol grounds where mobs of then-President Donald Trump’s supporters eventually broke in.While the man’s actions outside the Capitol that day have drawn little scrutiny, his alleged connections to a plot to overthrow the 2020 election have recently come into sharp focus: He is attorney Kenneth Chesebro, the alleged architect of the scheme to subvert the 2020 Electoral College process by using fake GOP electors in multiple states. When asked by the House select committee where he was the first week of January 2021 and on January 6, Chesebro invoked his Fifth Amendment rights. But a CNN investigation has placed him...Latest news
