High court: Trans girl can run girls track in West Virginia

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:19:30 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed a 12-year-old transgender girl in West Virginia to continue competing on her middle school’s girls sports teams while a lawsuit over a state ban continues. The justices refused to disturb an appeals court order that made it possible for the girl, Becky Pepper-Jackson, to continue playing on her school’s track and cross-country teams, where she regularly finishes near the back of the pack.Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas would have allowed West Virginia to enforce its law against Pepper-Jackson. Pepper-Jackson is in the middle of the outdoor track season. She had filed a lawsuit challenging the law, the Save Women’s Sports Act, which West Virginia lawmakers adopted in 2021. A federal appeals court had allowed her to compete while she appealed a lower court ruling that upheld the West Virginia law. Two weeks ago, track and field banned transgender athletes from international competitions. West Virginia is among 20 states ...

MOSCOW (AP) — A lawyer for jailed Russian opposition figure Vladimir Kara-Murza Jr. said Thursday that the prosecutor in Kara-Murza’s closed-door trial for treason and spreading false information about the Russian military in Ukraine has called for a sentence of 25 years in prison.Kara-Murza, a journalist and a prominent opponent of the Kremlin, has been behind bars since his arrest a year ago.Russian media quoted lawyer Maria Esimont as saying the prosecutor is asking for the sentence to be served in a “strict regime” prison colony where conditions are harsh and prisoners are held in locked cells rather than in barracks. The defense is scheduled to present its closing arguments on Friday and Kara-Murza is expected to make a statement, she said. The charges against Kara-Murza stem from his March 15 speech to the Arizona House of Representatives in which he denounced Russia’s military action in Ukraine. Investigators added the treason charges while he was in custody.Russia adopt...

NBA denies Dallas protest over uncontested Warriors basket

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:19:30 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA on Thursday denied a protest by the Dallas Mavericks over a confusing sequence that led to an uncontested basket for Golden State in a two-point win by the Warriors. The league said the Mavericks weren’t deprived of an opportunity to win because the sequence happened with almost 14 minutes remaining and Dallas led after the basket. While the NBA acknowledged officials could have managed the situation better, that wasn’t enough for the “extraordinary remedy” of upholding the protest.Kevin Looney had an uncontested dunk off an inbound play after a timeout for a 90-87 Golden State lead in the third quarter of the Warriors’ 127-125 victory on March 22.The Mavericks went into the timeout thinking they had possession after official Andy Nagy pointed in Golden State’s direction for possession but then quickly pointed to the Dallas bench to indicate a timeout.Looney protested when Nagy pointed toward the Dallas bench, but Nagy appeared to explain tha...

The warm embrace and the cold shoulder: China mines Europe’s fractures during joint visit

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:19:30 GMT

BEIJING — It was a tale of two visits.French President Emmanuel Macron was given the full red-carpet treatment this week in Beijing, fêted at a state banquet, and greeted by military parades and firing cannons on Tiananmen Square. When Macron’s plane touched down, China’s foreign minister personally welcomed him. When European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived, she got the ecology minister — at the regular passenger exit.It was a pattern on display again and again on Wednesday and Thursday, as China tried to play divide and conquer with the two leaders, who had teamed up on the visit to try and present a united European front. While Macron’s schedule was overflowing, von der Leyen’s was bare-bones. While Macron was attending a lavish state banquet Thursday night with Chinese President Xi Jinping, von der Leyen was giving a sober press conference at the EU delegation’s own headquarters. While state media trumpeted the Sino-French relationship, Chinese social media ...
