At this St. Paul exhibit, artists get paid even if they don’t sell

After teaching for 20 years, Barbara Bridges said she started the nonprofit Art to Change the World for a selfish reason: “I wanted to grow old with such great people.”Art to Change the World brings social and cultural issues to the forefront of its exhibitions and will be doing just that on June 1 in partnership with St. Paul’s Grand Hand Gallery to present its latest exhibition “Precious.”The inspiration for the project? Miley Cyrus’ latest hit song, “Flowers.”“Precious” is one of the nonprofit’s more traditional exhibits, Bridges said, where she and three other artists will showcase high-end art pieces created from recycled products, the “magic” of everyday objects. In doing so they call into question what society deems as precious. One of Bridges’ creations is a self-described over-the-top necklace made from an old chandelier. The title of the piece, “I Can Take Myself Dancing,” comes from a line in Cyrus’ song.New owners of the Grand Hand Gallery, Jim Jacobson and Rachael Hartzl...

WHO R U: What your license plate number could tell other drivers

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:18:01 GMT

(NEXSTAR) - For over one hundred years, our cars have had license plates. While it’s obvious personalized license plates can help you tell those around you a bit about yourself (unless your state rejected your idea), your standard-issued plate may carry an equally understandable message. A regular license plate will typically come with a combination of letters and numbers. In Wisconsin, new plates have three letters and four numbers (it used to be three and three, until all combinations were exhausted) In California, standard plates follow a certain pattern: number, three letters, then three numbers. The state is on its last sequence, which begins with 9, and expects to run out of combinations in 2027, a spokesperson tells Nexstar. Mostly, the only information you’ll be able to garner from a standard-issued license plate is how old it is. Many states, like Wisconsin and California, are cycling through sequences.  Hobby Lobby doesn’t use barcodes: Here’s their explan...

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:18:01 GMT

BottleRock Napa Valley kicked off year 10 in a big way on Friday (May 26), throwing a party for 40,000 music lovers and delivering a soundtrack that included current hitmakers like Post Malone, classic acts such as the Smashing Pumpkins and too many up-and-coming artists to even try and mention in this already unwieldly opening sentence.Attendees rejoiced in the relatively mild weather as they took in some 10 hours of music on a half dozen stages, while eating and drinking to their hearts’ content from dozens upon dozens of vendors onsite at the Napa Valley Expo in downtown Napa. The festival, which got its start in 2013 and has taken place every year except for 2020 (due to the COVID-19), continues through Sunday with such big-name talents as Wu-Tang Clan, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sheryl Crow, Los Lobos, Lil Nas X and the National. The crowd’s focus on Day One was squarely on Post Malone, the multiplatinum-selling pop artist known for “Rockstar,” “Circles&...

Verstappen takes pole for Monaco Grand Prix ahead of Alonso as Perez crashes

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:18:01 GMT

MONACO (AP) — Defending Formula One champion Max Verstappen produced a superb final lap to take pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix on Saturday and deny Aston Martin veteran Fernando Alonso his first pole in 11 years.Verstappen called his first pole at Monaco “very lovely” but there was nothing to cheer for his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez as last year’s race winner crashed early in qualifying.Alpine’s Esteban Ocon surprisingly led near the end of the session before the 41-year-old Alonso moved back to the top as he chased a first pole since the German GP in 2012, when he was with Ferrari. But Verstappen had other ideas as he brushed the walls of the sinewy street circuit to beat Alonso’s time by just 0.084 seconds and clinch his fourth pole of the season and 23rd of his career.“I knew this weekend it was going to be tight,” the 25-year-old Verstappen said. “I definitely pushed a bit harder.”Alonso walked over to Verstappen and shook his hand after a tigh...
